Affordable & Expansive Learning to be had! What's new? Well, these talks that I'm involved in with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario are keeping me on my toes - Mostly because they keep moving the goal posts!! So, I was up until 1am on Saturday night writing 'supplemental information' to my submission regarding "Diagnosis". I came to realize
the next day that I hadn't written a blog for this week... and "Oi!" But do I ever have a lot on my plate right now. So, I thought, "HEY, this write up I just created is pretty good... I'll just add a preamble and ending sentences, and throw it up as my Blog!
It leads me into A REQUEST if I may... I would love to collect a series of testimonials from veterinarians about a) how learning manual assessment techniques from physical therapists made them better
diagnosticians and/or b) that from first hand experience, they see the value in allowing PT's to make and communicate a Functional Diagnosis. I'd need something - just an email would work - this week! (Yes, that's how much notice we were given!) OH, and SECOND REQUEST... This is is for the physios / PTs. I am looking for papers, blogs, book chapters... any references (that I don't already have - see my blog) pertaining to a Functional
Diagnosis / Physical Diagnosis by physios / PTs on animals. I don't want to miss anything... but I also need more than 4 hours of sleep a night. Please & Thank you my friends! Now, I must get back to work! So, that's it for the updates... !! On with the show...

FOUR LEG TRAING VIDEO 244 SELECT MANUAL ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES & CLINICAL REASONING USED IN CANINE PHYSICAL REHABILITATION
|
|
From the Paper: Edge-Hughes L, Kramer AL, Acciani R. Select Manual Assessment Techniques and Clinical Reasoning Skills Used in Canine Physical Rehabilitation Before Engaging in Manual Therapy Treatment. Vet Clin North Am Small Anim Pract. 2023 Jul;53(4):743-756.
KEY POINTS
- Clinical reasoning skills are fundamental in canine physical rehabilitation as a method of
making sense of all data collected during an examination and formulating a functional diagnosis.
- Observation skills allow analysis of posture and movement patterns that further guide the direction of the physical examination.
- Manual assessment skills consider selective tissue tension techniques, end feels, and palpation findings.
- The culmination of clinical reasoning, observations, and manual assessment techniques can serve to direct the treatment
plan including what, where, when, and how manual therapy should be performed to help achieve the rehabilitation goals.

Veterinary Diagnoses / Physical Therapy Diagnoses / Functional Diagnoses
|

I’ve been thinking a lot about diagnoses of late. I’ve been challenged to justify that a physiotherapist (with training in animal rehabilitation) can make a diagnosis. I think we would all agree that non-veterinarians do not make medical diagnoses, but is that all there is? A medical diagnosis or nothing? Within the Ontario
Physiotherapy Act, scope of practice is defined as follows: “The practice of physiotherapy is the assessment of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and cardio-respiratory systems, the diagnosis of diseases or disorders associated with physical dysfunction, injury or pain and the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention or relief of physical dysfunction, injury or pain to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment function and promote mobility.” Physiotherapists are authorized to
communicate a “diagnosis identifying a disease, a physical disorder or dysfunction as the cause of a person’s symptoms.” Several sources cite there being different types or classifications of diagnoses in human and veterinary medicine: The Free Medical Dictionary lists these different types of diagnoses: diagnosis [di″ag-no´sis]... Have You Checked it Out?

For over a year, I worked with Physiotec (an online exercise platform) to create a exercise prescription platform for canine rehab practitioners. And this is it!
I've put hundreds of exercises together onto this handy platform. You can find the exercises, print off a handout, send them a link to the VIDEOS of the exercises.
There's so much: Massage, owner-friendly joint therapies, exercises, advisement, etc, etc!
NOW... be aware that this platform is run by / owned by Physiotec (and they charge separately for it's use)... and the support for the website is via physiotec as well. The MAIN GLITCH I am finding now... is that when you e-mail or call tech-support you will NEED to LET THEM KNOW that your question
pertains to FOURLEGEXERCISE! (Otherwise, it's a bit of a schmozzle to get sorted, because they direct you to the Physiotec website vs FourLegExercise website!!!) Check it out and LET ME KNOW (what you think, your experiences, etc... so that I can report back if there are issues!)
I hope you find it useful!
Go there... Check it out!!!
