FourLeg: My dogs might be right handed!!

Egads!
It's just after midnight and I almost forgot about you!  Good grief!  Blame it on the weather!  A freak snow storm hit Calgary this week, dumping snow on us for 3 days!  We got about 18 inches of snow in all… and it did massive damage to the trees.  With the leaves all out in their full glory, the deciduous trees just aren't made to take the weight of the wet heavy snow. So tons of branches came down, and the snow bent over many bushes and shrubs.  And killed any and all flower-garden plants.  But, the snow has mostly melted as of Sunday and so we were in the yard with the chain saw cutting big limbs and hauling away branches.  Six Truck loads so far… and we're no where near done!  But… we're all safe and well.  We just feel bad for the trees!

FourLeg News - Volume 3, Issue 5
This is a great newsletter!  Yes, I'm biased… but it contains all of the research I could find on Agility.  I was happy to get one newsletter's worth!  AND, I have two guest reviewers contributing to this edition.  Two articles each reviewed by Lorna Clark, PT, Dipl. Canine Rehab from Saskatoon & Carrie Smith, PT, CCRT from Ottawa.  Thanks ladies!  I hope everyone enjoys the articles and the input from Lorna, Carrie & me!

BLOG - A favourite of the literature reviews
This was one of my favourites of the articles I reviewed.  It makes me think that there is so much we don't understand about dogs and how we work with them.

AND… why I think my dogs could be right handed!!!

Lateralisation of the dog brain has been reported with functional asymmetries found in paw usage and in sensory perception of acoustic , visual , and olfactory stimuli.  In this study the authors examined the influence of lateralisation in agility dogs , looking at paw preference, owner/handler location, and temperament in relation to performance on the agility course.

Oooh intriguing… do go on!!
There you have it for this week!  Off to bed I go!
Have a great week everyone!

Cheers,

Laurie
