Happy Easter!

I hope Easter was good for those of you that celebrate it.  In our house, it means another holiday with chocolate and a big meal with family!  We're 'down by 1' in our house this holiday (my oldest son is on a trip to Europe with the school), which means that the Easter Bunny felt that it was unnecessary to hide chocolate eggs all over the house for just the 15 year old to find on his own!  (He was disappointed!  We've made them hunt for eggs every year... not sure how old is too old to hunt for eggs...)

And I am so excited for my oldest son to be going to Europe.  They are doing a tour of 'Canada through the World Wars'... visiting England, France, Germany, Belgium, & Holland.  I'm pretty emotional about it as well.  He'll be going to one of the big Canadian Veterans cemeteries in France, where my grandfather is buried.  My mom's dad left for the war when she was 6 months old and never made it back home.  Billy will be the first one in our family to visit his grave site!  My husband's grandfather also went over to fight, but acquired acute appendicitis and was never deployed to battle.  He lost most of his buddies.  He's asked Billy to say 'hi' to 3 of his good friends who are also in the same cemetery.  Additionally, we also searched out that another one of my great uncles is in the same cemetery as well.  I'm so glad that Billy and 44 of his classmates will be learning about the sacrifices made in the name of peace and humanity, and how much we have to be grateful for!

Now onto lighter topics!

This video describes vestibulitis and what is known about it: signs, symptoms, causes, treatment... from a veterinary perspective.  It covers everything except the idiopathic geriatric vestibulitis... because that one, I think that the 'human info' is more 'on spot' than the vet info...but within this video I direct you to where you can learn more about THAT cause!  Anyways... I think you'll like it.  Tune in next week for 'physio treatments' for vestibulitis (i.e. treating the dizziness...)

COMMENTARY from the "Smelling Your Patients" blog:

Oh my goodness I had a good laugh when I read your blog. I always smell the dogs. In fact last week I said to a vet I work with I wanted a dog checked for UTI as I could smell her. And the other vet pipes up "make sure you test, she's always right". She has this freaky smell ability.

Do I have super smell? Or is it like you said we are up close and personal with the dog. I think it is a trained sense otherwise owners can pick it up.

Ps I do always smell breath, skin, pee, and incisions!

Years ago I took an introductory acupressure course and they actually teach smelling the dog from the top of their head all the way down their back (can't remember if tail is included) as part of the initial assessment. Think I might go back to doing this again
