Mobility aids & Mental health...
What's up...
The air conditioning unit is starting to crap out at the clinic.  Last Monday it was 89 F inside (which is 31.6 C)... but there is no way we are putting any money into getting it looked at because we'll be moving our clinic in the fall.  Our current landlords are 'difficult', and the building is too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer, and we're ready for a new layout and an extra treatment room!  So... be prepared for further updates on our move (just around the corner from our existing location) and all of the headaches associated with such things!

And with me personally, last week I tried yoga again on Friday.  Just the 'cold' yoga.  I've decided that it was the hot yoga that killed my SIJ.  So far so good.  This week, I head to Halifax to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association's Congress.  Lots of meetings planned, lots of networking and 'schmoozing', and if I'm lucky, I'll get to take in a lecture or two and hopefully some tasty seafood!

Now, here is your learning...

AND... one quick note first:  If you are new to FourLeg and happen to be having any issues with watching the videos, you will want to cut and paste the following url into your browser bar:
http://www.fourleg.com
Sometimes after people sign up on the secure page on FourLeg, their computer remembers the secure address for the website (https:), and takes them to the site via that prefix... but the rest of the pages aren't secured, only the sign up page... and if you go to watch the videos on the https:... site, then it won't allow you to watch them. So going to the http:// version will make everything turn out okay!!!
Member's Learning:  ToeGrips vs booties for slip sliding issues
I've done up this little video for everyone.  It's a look at Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips and more importantly, when they work and when the won't work, and what alternative you might have for recommendations for the slip-sliding dogs in your practice.  I think you'll like it!

Here's how your find it... LOGIN, click VIDEO TRAINING, and Scroll down to the bottom to find:  Video Training 114: ToeGrips vs Booties for Slipping!

I don't know which to suggest! Yes, take me to the video!
Blog: Mental health benefits of canine rehabilitation
While searching for blog topic ideas to ‘steal’ for my clinic’s blog, I found a great blog / article that I wanted to summarize and expand upon for you.

The blog I found was about how canine rehabilitation is healing for both the body and the mind.  Now this is a topic that I feel strongly about as well.  We have tons of dogs that come into the clinic delighted and happy to see their therapist or our UWT staff or to greet anyone in the vicinity.  Many owners exclaim that they simply tell their dog… “We’re going to see Auntie… [Insert name of staff member here]” and their dog gets all excited!  P.S.  I am Auntie Laurie to all of my patients… owners call me this, I get e-mails or Facebook messages addressing me as ‘Auntie Laurie’… I love it!

So perhaps the visit to the clinic is about more than the therapy and feeling good afterwards…
What the original blog was getting at was more about how rehabilitation itself can provide unintended mental benefits...
And then of course there is the benefit to the human...

So there you go for this week!  I'm heading into a busy time (Congress, Graduation Ceremonies, Portugal... and getting learning materials all lined up for you as well), so if I'm slow in replying to e-mails, please forgive me!

Until next time... Cheers!

Laurie
