My Back, Your Leg, The Dog's Carpus & MORE!
But first...

RETRACTION...
Remember the picture of the cat named Bosco from last week?  Well it turns out that he's not from Gotham Vet Center (New York)  as I had reported, instead he's from Sears Animal Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada.  So it appears to have been a case of duplicate Bonnies.  Ironically, I had two e-mail series that week from two different Bonnies, and I just morphed them into one Bonnie!  No major harm done, but it leaves me feeling like a bit of a 'putz'!!

REFLECTIONS...
Two weeks ago we had an intern at the clinic, a vet from Colorado.  We enjoyed having her with us as much as she enjoyed her time being with us.  And I love to hear what epiphanies people come away with.  In this particular case, two things hit me (and made me proud). 1) She felt so much better about knowing how she would best fit rehab into HER clinical practice (My 2 cents: Not everybody will have the same set up or use the knowledge in the same way... and that's okay.), and 2) We do manual therapy on just about every case. (Yep, and I think that's how it should be.  It's a main-stay of physical therapy.  Learn it. Do it. Love it!)

AND, let me tell you about my physio appointment with our new clinic therapist, Sue.  (Sue will be working part time on dogs at The Canine Fitness Centre and part time on humans in my Two Hands Physiotherapy room). So anyhow, it was a great appointment, with lots of 'stuff' found on me.  We only looked at my back, pelvis and hip region, but that yielded 2 pages of notes!  So it turns out that my SIJ is hypermobile, and my L5/S1 is also hypermobile and giving me dural / nerve signs to my ischial tuberosity.  I'm lacking flexibility in my illiopsoas and rectus femoris, and my gluteus medius was surprisingly weak!  So I've got homework, but I'm super happy to have had a thorough evaluation of my 'messed up' back, and a plan of action!

And here's the thing... it might be worthwhile for all of you to go for physical therapy at some point.  (Find someone with lots of manual therapy experience.) Yes, to keep you put together properly (and todays' training video might also help), but also to get a better idea of what you could or should be doing in your rehab assessments & prescriptions.  All of the pieces are connected!

Anyways, enough of the chit-chat...  On to YOUR learning for this week!

Blog: Supporting the 'good' leg
This week is another Q & A:

Hi Laurie,
I would love some guidance on a new patient, if you would be so kind.  Patton is a 3 yr old MN Golden mix, about 40 pounds, who was found in an abandoned home with a brachial plexus injury of unknown origin or duration on his left thoracic limb.  He was taken in by a local rescue group and recently adopted by a family.  While I feel pretty good about my plan for working with the injured limb, I'm also very concerned about his right thoracic limb.

Forum info
Okay, so I had some questions about about the Forum, and I thought that I should pass on the info to everyone.
  1. The Forum is located on the Members' side of FourLeg, so you'll need to login to find it.  Then look over to the right hand column where you normally look up the content, and at the bottom, you'll find Forum.  Click it!
  2. Now, to get on, you need to sign up with a NEW username and password. (Password can be the same as what you you to get into the Member's area). Next time you want 'in', it should remember you.
  3. Pick a user name that you want to be seen.
  4. Answer questions.  Post questions.
  5. Sign your posts please... It's nice to reply to a person by name!
  6. If you want to post a document or a picture, you can drag it into the message box or scroll down, click attachments, and then 'add files'.
  7. Videos... I'm still figuring it out.  So far, I'd suggest uploading to Youtube, and then posting the link.
And get on there and engage with the community!

So have a great week everyone!

Until next time... Cheers!

Laurie

P.S. Helpful Hints for members...
If you are new to FourLeg and happen to be having any issues with watching the videos, you will want to cut and paste the following url into your browser bar:
http://www.fourleg.com
Sometimes after people sign up on the secure page on FourLeg, their computer remembers the secure address for the website (https:), and takes them to the site via that prefix... but the rest of the pages aren't secured, only the sign up page... and if you go to watch the videos on the https:... site, then it won't allow you to watch them. So going to the http:// version will make everything turn out okay!!!

As members, If you are wanting to search a topic... then locate the white search bar in upper right hand side of the screen when you log in & are on the members' side of the site.  This is an easy way to find content in all formats!
