This past week, life got turned upside down.
So my husband went into the hospital on Monday, a week ago, after complaining of abdominal pain and diarrhea. He's been diagnosed with having a carcinoid tumour just behind his iliocecal valve. It's also wrapped up some blood vessels there. It's thrown metastases to his liver, which is common for this thing. It's not a cancer, but it's like a cancer. It's a neuroendocrine tumour in that it/they produce hormones - like serotonin, bradykinin, tachykinin (I
hadn't heard of that one), prostaglandins, histamine... We don't know much more as we're waiting to hear the results of all of the tests. Abdominal CT picked it up while we were in emerge. He's also had a chest CT, a biopsy, several blood tests, and a 24 hour urine collection.
We came out of hospital on Thursday evening. He's feeling much better. Diarrhea subsided a day later (they didn't treated it... so it must be my cooking!) and we should get a call from the specialist this week. There appears to be less than 10 doctors in Canada with experience treating these kind of tumours, and one is here in Calgary. So we feel very fortunate in that regard.
Treatment is multifaceted - often includes drugs that inhibit serotonin production (somatostatin analogues), with or without other therapies as deemed appropriate (chemo, or radiation). Sometimes they can do an hepatic artery embolization procedure where they shut of blood supply to the liver and it kills the metastases, and the health liver cells receive their blood supply from neighbouring vessels. (Success rate for that one is surprisingly
good!). And the doctors keep saying “patients can live many many years… 61 months on average.” Hmmmm... I'd like that number to be higher.
Beyond that, I'm doing acupuncture, energy healing, feeding him appropriately (yes, we've cut out all sugar... but do we go with foods that are low in serotonin or the ketogenic diet - because the two don't mesh), and teaching him how to meditate. Because this kind of tumour is so rare, it's hard to find information on adjunctive therapies that we could also be looking into. If you're 'in the know' on that - feel free to shoot me some
information.
So, there you go. Apologies if I periodically drop off the face of the planet, and you wonder why I've not answered your question or request. I'm just hanging on.

I’m going to share a secret. And to be honest, more people are doing this than they admit.
I sleep alone! There it’s out in the open. Yes, I still have a husband, and yes, we still share a bed from time to time (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). However, I have a bed and bedroom to myself and so does he! It started back during calving season when he was doing 2am checks on the heifers. He volunteered to sleep in another room (okay, it was on the couch as he claimed that the Double beds in the
empty boy’s rooms were not comfortable enough… and since then we’ve bought him a fabulous queen sized bed and mattress. But I digress.). And what happened?

NEXT SERIES OF SPINE COURSES in the USA
|
|
I can't sugar coat this. You need manual therapy training. You need to be able to assess and treat the spine. It's imperative! Problems here can cause lameness and pain! You need this information!
AND... if you already have chiropractic training, you are eligible to take the Advanced Manual Therapy for the Canine Spine course. I've taught tons of veterinarians with chiro training and my Advanced course is a HUGE hit with that crowd! If you've never taken one of my manual therapy courses, start with the Basic course. Trust me, it's more advanced than anything you got in your basic canine rehab training!

For over a year, I worked with Physiotec (an online exercise platform) to create a exercise prescription platform for canine rehab practitioners. And this is it!
I've put hundreds of exercises together onto this handy platform. You can find the exercises, print off a handout, send them a link to the VIDEOS of the exercises. There's so much: Massage, owner-friendly joint therapies,
exercises, advisement, etc, etc!
NOW... be aware that this platform is run by / owned by Physiotec (and they charge separately for it's use)... and the support for the website is via physiotec as well. The MAIN GLITCH I am finding now... is that when you e-mail or call tech-support you will NEED to LET THEM KNOW that your question pertains to FOURLEGEXERCISE! (Otherwise, it's a bit of a schmozzle to get sorted,
because they direct you to the Physiotec website vs FourLegExercise website!!!) Check it out and LET ME KNOW (what you think, your experiences, etc... so that I can report back if there are issues!)
I hope you find it useful!
Go there... Check it out!!!

Have a great week everyone!
Until next time... Cheers!
