Blog - Inflammation & Anti-inflammatories
And Four Leg content regarding Feet!!
The life updates:
Well, it looks like I'll be back up to 4 dogs again. Yes, I'm crazy. So a previous client of mine passed away about a year and a bit ago. The husband no longer wants to manage the acreage, or a home for that matter, is looking to find an apartment and to rehome his dogs!!! Well, two of them are shelties and I'm a sucker for shelties. So it looks like I'll be taking on an 11 year old, a 9 year old. And then my sheltie puppy
will be coming home in late September.
We have called our basement "The room of requirement" (Harry Potter reference), ever since we had it finished... First was my Borzoi breeder (plus her friend and 9 dogs in total), then was Mark, the son of a colleague and friend, then "Shower Chicken", and currently my 23 year old son is down there. Now, the shelties will be upstairs, so I guess it's the 'house of requirement'. I'm sensing a pattern. (Could be worse! It's only
dogs and not cocaine!) Pictures to come!
The Ontario issue seems to be moving along 'sensibly', however, I have been advised to continue to collect letters of reference from veterinarians I've taught (in some way, in some form, wherever in the world). Would you consider helping me out?

I NEED LETTERS OF SUPPORT (mainly from Veterinarians)!
To be considered a subject matter expert, I am looking for letters that cover topics such as:
- Laurie Edge-Hughes taught me safe & effective use of modalities (such as laser, shockwave, etc.)
- Laurie taught me effective physical assessment skills and how to use clinical reasoning to make a PHYSICAL / Pathofunctional / FUNCTIONAL diagnosis
- Laurie taught me how to plan treatments for rehab cases
- Laurie taught me manual therapy skills
You get the gist.
I am looking for DOZENS of letters. Please! Please! Thank you to those that already sent one. I appreciate it so very much. (Send to Laurie@FourLeg.com)
Thank you in advance for considering my request!

Four Leg Training Video # 208
Conducting a Sporting Dog Baseline Assessment
|
|
This video highlights a day of Sporting Dog Assessments that we did at my clinic in Calgary - What we did, what I'd do differently, what we learned, and how you could do something similar in your practice. It's a longer than normal video! 43 minutes! But I couldn't break it up... so grab a coffee or a gin and sit down for a short movie!

Inflammation & Anti-inflammatories
|
|
The following information comes from this paper:
Duchesne E, Dufresne SS, Dumont NA. Impact of Inflammation and Anti-inflammatory Modalities on Skeletal Muscle Healing: From Fundamental Research to the Clinic. Phys Ther. 2017;97(8):807-817.
Some snippets from the abstract:
- Although inflammation was originally believed to interfere with skeletal muscle regeneration, several recent studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of inflammatory cells on muscle healing.
- To better appreciate the paradoxical roles of inflammation, clinicians must have a better comprehension of the fundamental mechanisms regulating the inflammatory response.
- In this perspective article, cellular, animal, and human studies were analyzed to summarize recent knowledge regarding the impact of inflammation on muscle regeneration in acute or chronic conditions.

I've put all of my exercises (and some of yours) onto a handy platform - Physiotec! It's a wonderful online resource for delivering home exercise / advice programs.
There are HUNDREDS of exercises FOURLEGEXERCISE.COM already! You can find the exercises, print off a handout, send them a link to the VIDEOS of the exercises. There's
so much! Massage, Owner-friendly joint therapies, Exercises, Advisement, etc, etc.
NOW... be aware that this platform is run by / owned by / billed for separately, by... Physiotec... and the support for the website is via physiotec as well. The MAIN GLITCH I am finding now... is that when you e-mail or call tech-support you will NEED to LET THEM KNOW that your question pertains to
FOURLEGEXERCISE! (Otherwise, it's a bit of a schmozzle to get sorted, because they direct you to the Physiotec website vs FourLegExercise website!!!) Check it out and LET ME KNOW (what you think, your experiences, etc... so that I can report back if there are issues!)
I hope you find it useful!
GO THERE... CHECK IT OUT!
