You are receiving this e-blast because you signed up for these e-blasts on FourLeg.com. If for some reason, this makes you unhappy... then unsubscribe at the bottom. But for everyone else... HEY! Let's get on with the show! Looking to Learn New Stuff?
Looking to Refresh your knowledge?
Looking for a Library of rehab info?
WELL LOOK NO FURTHER!
www.FourLeg.com is your answer!!!
The MOST AFFORDABLE, MOST COMPREHENSIVE, & MOST CLINICALLY RELEVANT Library of
Canine Rehab Content!
What's new?
1. At the clinic, we've hired 2 new part time assistants! Yay!
2. This week's blog is a guest blog! Woo hoo! Thank you to Ansi van der Walt from South Africa for this one - Why Animal Physiotherapists Don't Treat Arthritis (but don't tell anyone). It's GREAT!!! And it goes along with my previous clinical reasoning blogs and how to think like a physio series. You gotta check it out!
3. Just a reminder to send me your thoughts on the rehab correlations you've seen. For example on Saturday, I treated a dog with an old radius-ulna fracture repair that has carpal arthritis 8 years later. She also has an increase in stiffness and mild tenderness in her lumbar spine - presumably from the posture she now uses to offload that front leg.) What sorts of correlations are you seeing??
I've set up a Survey to capture your thoughts and findings.

4. I'm just RE-USING point number 4 from last week: Little known fact, I accidentally ended up becoming the Admin for an animal rehab/physio/etc. Facebook group. It was a page I was on, and I had tried to add a friend to it. From there I went on to look and see who the admin person was. Nobody. FB asked me if I wanted to admin this group. I clicked 'yes'... and low and behold, I became the Admin. So, I figured that I
should take the role seriously and get people on the page and engaging there! So, I will encourage you to go to and ask to join the Animal/Veterinary Physiotherapists & Other Professions group - and I'll see ya there as well!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1770019073222615
5. As I am writing this it's Valentine's Day. I got flowers, cheese, and chocolates. And I gave my husband a variety of sausages from a specialty European shop down the road from my work. You can't go wrong with Meat and Cheese!!!
So, that's it for the updates... On with the show!!

By the way, I'm still asking for testimonials.
PLEASE, would any veterinarian that I have ever taught on the subject of canine rehab (assessment, making a 'rehab diagnosis', treatment, exercise prescription, modalities, etc., etc.) - Live, or even if within FourLeg, please write me a letter of recommendation. The intention is to prove ME as a credible source on these topics. Crazy...
but this has been suggested to me as a way to help prove myself as a content expert when in discussions with the Vet Colleges (Vet Boards) up here! And, it doesn't matter where in the world you are from. PLEASE and THANK YOU!
(You can e-mail them to me at Laurie@FourLeg.com. I am so incredibly grateful to those of you that have helped me out with this already.)
Let's get onto your learning for the week...

Why Animal Physiotherapists do not treat arthritis (but don’t tell anyone).

What is arthritis? Good question. Opinions as to what diagnostic criteria constitute the pathology broadly referred to as osteoarthritis (OA) differs in literature. There are three broad definitions of osteoarthritis. These are radiographic OA, symptomatic OA and self-reported OA. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on radiographic and symptomatic OA only, as animals are unable to self-report
symptoms.
Radiographic OA by definition considers only pathophysiological joint signs present on radiographic images, which can be graded (scored). However, many people (and animals) have radiographic signs of joint degeneration without ever experiencing related symptoms or disability, so is this really arthritis? It has been shown that over 40% of adults over the age of 40 will have MRI features of osteoarthritis in at least one knee, without
ever having had any symptoms (2). Symptomatic OA considers both radiographic evidence of joint pathology, as well as symptoms such as pain, stiffness and loss of function in reaching a diagnosis (1). In a review of patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis in UK primary care, 75% were treated by analgesics (3), so we can safely assume that the majority of animals presenting for veterinary care that are diagnosed with osteoarthritis, were observed to be in some degree of discomfort, and therefore
fall into the symptomatic OA group.
In short, owners do not seek help for their pets because they have ‘arthritis’. Owners take their dogs or cats or horses to the vet because they have developed a dysfunction

For over a year, I worked with Physiotec (an online exercise platform) to create a exercise prescription platform for canine rehab practitioners. And this is it!
I've put hundreds of exercises together onto this handy platform. You can find the exercises, print off a handout, send them a link to the VIDEOS of the exercises. There's so much: Massage, owner-friendly joint therapies, exercises, advisement, etc,
etc!
NOW... be aware that this platform is run by / owned by Physiotec (and they charge separately for it's use)... and the support for the website is via physiotec as well. The MAIN GLITCH I am finding now... is that when you e-mail or call tech-support you will NEED to LET THEM KNOW that your question pertains to FOURLEGEXERCISE! (Otherwise, it's a bit of a schmozzle to get sorted, because they direct you to the
Physiotec website vs FourLegExercise website!!!) Check it out and LET ME KNOW (what you think, your experiences, etc... so that I can report back if there are issues!)
I hope you find it useful!
Go there... Check it out!!!

Have a great week everyone!
