Affordable & Expansive Learning to be had!
What's new?
1. This past week I finished listening to The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek. (Business is an infinite game... there is no winner or loser, so stop comparing and just do YOU... but better and better!). I am currently listening to Think Again by Adam Grant. It's about giving yourself permission to rethink about things (your opinions, situations, everything really, just like a researcher... be willing to accept that you were wrong. Embrace
"wrongness", as it means you have learned something new and evolved!) In this book I've also learned about the Dunning-Kruger Effect and Imposter Syndrome... super fascinating! (I think I have one of these and I believe I know someone that has the other...)
2. Additional life updates?
- The youngest son bought a donkey! Yes, a real donkey. A miniature donkey, but a guardian donkey to guard the goats he plans on getting soon as well! Scroll down for a picture. Further discussion reveals that it might actually be a Mini Hinny (which is the product of a female donkey and male horse...). [I did not know that this was a thing... look it up! A mule on the other hand is the
product of a female horse and a male donkey. I did not know that there was a difference!]
- Calving season has begun... so I'm starting put up baby pictures on Facebook.
- My mother got her first Covid shot... but hubby and I don't qualify until the next stage, that is IF there will be vaccine available. (I gotta say, Canada is NOT leading the way in this vaccination thing!)
- Otherwise, it's just been more meetings. More politics. More advocacy.
3. Based on the responses about Things to Learn AFTER you've certified, I have created a NEW survey.
What Topics Would You Like To Learn Related To Business?
4. Also thank you to everyone sticking with me and enjoying the new FourLeg format and look! It really is the best bang for your buck in regards to a continuing learning resource.
So, that's it for the updates... On with the show!!

By the way, I'm still asking for testimonials.
PLEASE, would any veterinarian that I have ever taught on the subject of canine rehab (assessment, making a 'rehab diagnosis', treatment, exercise prescription, modalities, etc., etc.) - Live, or even if within FourLeg, please write me a letter of recommendation. The intention is to prove ME as a credible source on these topics. Crazy...
but this has been suggested to me as a way to help prove myself as a content expert when in discussions with the Vet Colleges (Vet Boards) up here! And, it doesn't matter where in the world you are from. PLEASE and THANK YOU!
(You can e-mail them to me at Laurie@FourLeg.com. I am so incredibly grateful to those of you that have helped me out with this already.)
Let's get onto your learning for the week...

Possible Early Sign of Lumbosacral Disc Disease
|
|
Lately I’ve been seeing more initial assessments than I usually do. I’m covering a maternity leave at my clinic and doing extra hours to fill in missing time slots. This means that as compared to my normal schedule where I see my regular clients, or provide second opinions within my clinic, or the occasional sporting dog, I am seeing just regular, random new patients.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the universe gives you multiples of ‘stuff’ when it wants you to pay attention. I’ve found this time and time again, especially in the clinic, where I get a theme and a ‘run’ of cases. So, the past two weeks the theme is lumbosacral disc disease.
Tons of them!!! (Okay, maybe 4… but in a two-week time span, that’s a lot!)
What was more interesting than the obvious L-S dogs with their typical hunched back, scuffing toes, tail tucked, painful to normal palpation, were the marginally symptomatic dogs.
So, here we go!

How Dogs Find HOME
|
|
Have you ever wondered how dogs find their way home when they’re lost? Well, so have scientists!
I accidentally came across an interesting paper on this subject and decided to jump down that rabbit hole to learn more.
This study looked at 27 hunting dogs over 600 trials! They attached GPS devices to their collars and allowed them to roam free in a forested area. To return home, dogs either followed their tracks to get back, or they scouted a new path back home. Tracking home seems pretty self-explanatory. However, the dogs that scouted a new path home did so by first performing what the researchers called a ‘compass run’. They started off by running a short (20 meter) run along
the north-south geomagnetic axis. It didn’t matter which direction ‘home’ actually was, they started off their ‘scouting’ with this run. The researchers wrote: “We propose that this run is instrumental for bringing the mental map into register with the magnetic compass and to establish the heading of the animal.”

For over a year, I worked with Physiotec (an online exercise platform) to create a exercise prescription platform for canine rehab practitioners. And this is it!
I've put hundreds of exercises together onto this handy platform. You can find the exercises, print off a handout, send them a link to the VIDEOS of the exercises. There's so much: Massage, owner-friendly joint therapies, exercises, advisement, etc,
etc!
NOW... be aware that this platform is run by / owned by Physiotec (and they charge separately for it's use)... and the support for the website is via physiotec as well. The MAIN GLITCH I am finding now... is that when you e-mail or call tech-support you will NEED to LET THEM KNOW that your question pertains to FOURLEGEXERCISE! (Otherwise, it's a bit of a schmozzle to get sorted, because they direct you to the
Physiotec website vs FourLegExercise website!!!) Check it out and LET ME KNOW (what you think, your experiences, etc... so that I can report back if there are issues!)
I hope you find it useful!
Go there... Check it out!!!

Have a great week everyone!
